IMCF Fund Briefing Note: International Legal Frameworks Supporting Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Knowledge

IMC Fund Briefing Note: International Legal Frameworks

The IMC Fund publishes its briefing note on international legal frameworks relating to Indigenous medicines.

Amid growing global interest in traditional substances and psychedelics, the Indigenous Medicine Conservation Fund (IMC Fund) presents an analysis of key global legal instruments.

This document highlights the sovereignty, self-determination, and cultural rights of Indigenous peoples, ensuring they are not merely stakeholders but true rights-holders in the face of commercialization, ethical research, and biopiracy issues.

BOTF has been accredited by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Traditional Knowledge Division as an observer for the sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore (IGC 49).

It is highly recommended to briefly summarize the 4 major pillars detailed in your note to encourage visitors to download it:

  • United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)

  • Convention on Biological Diversity – Nagoya Protocol
  • WIPO Treaty (2024)

  • Rights of Nature Laws
